1) What is Merchant Navy?

Merchant Navy is the commercial shipping of different types of cargoes like oil, bulk, container, gases and chemical from one port to another and one country to another. Over 90% of world trade is done by sea and Merchant Navy is this fleet of ships or vessels where Seafarers in different rankings operate these ships and engage in safe, secure transportation of such cargo

2) What is the course about and what is its scope?

Since there is a need for trained manpower to safely operate the ships at sea and carry out safe transfer of the cargo, various maritime training institutes conduct these courses to train officers and ratings to operate ships. Trainings can be for either Officers or Ratings. Although before one becomes a Seafarer he/she needs to be trained for a minimum of one-year pre-sea course. The pre sea training can be conducted for either the Deck or the Engine departments. The Deck trainee can in due course of time, rise to the rank of Captain, whereas, the Engineering trainee can rise to the rank of Chief Engineer, provided they successfully complete all the trainings and certification requirements.
Engine cadets can join the 2 years Diploma in Marine Engineering Course after having completed 12 standard schooling/WAEC with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and English.

3) What are the areas in which students are trained? (Subjects)

All engine cadets study subjects like IC engines, Marine auxiliaries, Marine Boilers, Automation, Naval Architecture, Ship Construction apart from hands on training in workshops, labs and also various live machineries fitted in the campus. Over and above this, they will undergo basic STCW Safety courses.

4) How to apply?

Interested students may apply online by completing the application form in the website www.lmti-lr.org.
New application process will start from the month of May of every year.

5) When are the courses starting?

DME – August of every year.

6) What are the medical parameters for joining merchant navy?

Physically fit and meet the standards laid out by IMO( International Maritime Organization). More details can be found in our website lmti-lr.org

7) Do I have to pay for my medical test?

Yes, you will have pay for the medical test.

8) Are girls also eligible for joining these merchant navy courses?

Yes, girls are eligible for joining the merchant navy.

9) Which international authority governs Merchant navy and takes care of seafarers?

The International Maritime Organization (IMO).

10) When is the Medical Test conducted? Can I get it done from my local doctor?

The Medical Test is conducted after the written tests and interviews are completed. Successful candidates have to undergo the medical tests at approved hospitals by approved doctors. A list of the approved hospital/doctors will be announced to the candidates. It is preferable that candidates get their screening test done by any doctor, as per standards laid down, to avoid disappointment at a later stage.

11) What are the fees for the course?

Successful candidates will undergo the 2-year program free of charge. Training costs and essential living costs will be borne by the Institute.

12) Are the courses approved by the government?

Yes. The courses have the approval of Ministry of Education, NCHE and Liberia Maritime Authority.

13) Is staying in hostel compulsory? Is there a separate hostel for girls?

Yes. The courses are compulsorily residential courses. Girls have a separate hostel.

14) Are mobile phones and personal laptops allowed on campus?

Mobile phones are allowed on campus except in the academic area. Personal laptops are allowed. However, they will be allowed for personal use on weekends only. Majority of the hostel area has Wi-Fi connectivity.

15) Can we visit the campus to see the facilities?

Yes. The working hours are 0900 hrs - 1630 hrs from Mon. to Fri. and 0900 hrs to 1200 hrs on Saturdays. You may visit the campus preferably with prior appointment.

16) What are the sports facilities on campus?

The campus offers a variety of outdoor as well as indoor sports facilities. Also, the Institute is having a well-equipped gym and swimming pool.
